SignTech Form's Take on the Australian Open
Conversations About Tennis Between SignTech Staff
I’ve noticed that not many people who work at SignTech, a paperless company, are avid tennis watchers. It seems that most of the workers at SignTech are more inclined to be into extreme sports, which is quite different from the paper-free company. This makes starting a tennis conversation during lunch break nearly impossible for me. So, I’m reaching out to you, hopefully avid tennis fans who have been following the Australian Open.
The Match Between Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Warwinka
Watching the match between Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Warwinka was the highlight of my week. What better way to start the year of 2014 than with a good old-fashioned Australian Open? Stanislas’ win against Novak was surprising, but I believe it was well-deserved as Stanislas must have worked extremely hard for it. However, I can’t help but wonder if his win was due to pure raw talent or just pure luck. Did he catch Novak on a bad day? Novak is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world, on par with legendary Spaniard player Rafael Nadal and ranked just one spot above famed English player Andy Murray (who is ranked number 2 in the world). Novak has won the last three consecutive Australian Open titles, but it seems there won’t be a fourth, much to the disappointment of Novak’s fans. In the last fourteen times they met, Novak won every time, which makes me wonder why there wasn’t a fifteenth win. In the first sets of the game, we saw Novak making puzzling mistakes, and even though he stepped up his game in the fifth set, he still lost the match.
The Women’s Side of the Australian Open
Aside from that, the women’s section of this year’s Australian Open is also quite interesting. Serena Williams, although a force to be reckoned with, ended her 25-match winning streak against Ivanovic. It really is the time for the underdogs to shine. Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams are both out of the draw, making it considerably easier for other players to win.
In this match, our eyes should be on Li and Boucherad. Eugenie, a nineteen-year-old player, has really surprised us by becoming the very first Canadian to reach the semi-finals in the Australian Open. This brings her to a showdown against Li Na on Thursday. Many suspect that Li, a two-time Australian Open finalist, will be the winner of this match, but let’s not be too quick to write off Eugenie. Yes, she may be a nineteen-year-old belieber with the tendencies of being a typical teenager, but if her results are anything to go by, the raw talent that this lady has on the court is anything but typical. I would have liked to see Sharapova and Williams face off against these two, but Thursday will bring the match many have been waiting for.
